Video AS Roma 1 - 1 Sampdoria
Francesco Totti moved into joint third place in the all-time list of Serie A goalscorers, but his goal was not enough to earn Roma victory to 10-man Sampdoria.
The veteran forward netted his 216th top-flight goal to go level with Giuseppe Meazza and Jose Altafini in the 34th minute, but, despite having Enzo Maresca sent off in the first minute of the second half, Samp equalised just after the hour mark when Gianni Munari scored following a mistake by goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg.
The draw left Samp in third place in the table, three points behind Juventus and Napoli, while Roma are eighth.
The visitors were the first to threaten when Nicola Pozzi shot just wide from outside the area in the eighth minute.
At the other end Mattia Destro brought a comfortable save from goalkeeper Sergio Romero and Federico Balzaretti fired a long-range effort narrowly past the post.
Erik Lamela headed wide from a Totti corner before the capital club's talisman opened the scoring.
The 35-year-old shot low into the bottom right corner after being set up by Alessandro Florenzi.
He is now nine goals behind Swedish former AC Milan striker Gunnar Nordahl in the all-time Serie A scoring charts, with Silvio Piola the runaway leader with 274.
Roma continued to press and Destro had another effort comfortably saved by Romero.
Samp suffered another blow at the start of the second half when Maresca was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Lamela.
Totti and Lamela both fired over as the hosts looked to kill the game off, but completely against the run of play they were pegged back.
Holland international Stekelenburg failed to deal with an easy ball and Munari pounced to score from close range in the 62nd minute.
Roma responded with Totti again involved, this time doing well to set up Destro, who could only shoot wide.
Totti himself blazed over with five minutes to go and then headed just off target two minutes later as he tried to find a winner for his side, but they had to settle for a point.
